Connection Before Education

In the early days, when I was just learning to walk on the path of Nonviolent Communication, I learnt one of the most important lessons from Dr Marshall B Rosenberg. It was a simple three-word teaching…

“CONNECTION BEFORE EDUCATION.”

In the last 12 years, I have seen time and time again how people are busy educating each other,  (e.g. telling what is right and what is wrong, what is good and what is bad) and expecting that they will get the desired outcome. But very seldom they get what they want. When we try to bring about change in others by using right / wrong thinking, without having a heart to heart connection, the probability of getting the desired outcome is very low. People might do it out of fear or out of respect. They will do it from the space of unwillingness and it won’t be a wholehearted giving.

On the other hand, if there is a heart to heart connection, and you request someone to do something, in that case, the likelihood of getting things done is very high. And the person will do it from the space of joy and willingness.

Whether you are in the role of Parent or Teacher or be it Team-Building or Leadership, always remember this Golden mantra ‘Connection Before Education’.
Keep Connecting!
